What is the Native Title Anthropologist Grant Program?
The Australian Government’s Attorney-General’s Department proudly announces the Native Title Anthropologist Grant Program for the period 2025–2028. This initiative seeks to bolster the capacity within the native title anthropology field, significantly contributing to the resolution and management of native title claims, which is vital for the protection and recognition of First Nations people’s native title rights.
Native Title Anthropologist Grant Program level of support
The Australian Government has announced a total of up to $1.133 million (GST exclusive) over 3 years for the Native Title Anthropologist Grant Program 2025–2028 round.
There is no minimum or maximum grant amount. Applicants may apply for a grant of the total amount of available funds. Grants cannot exceed the amount of available funds. Applicants should consider that there is expected to be high demand for funding.
- 2025–26: $371,000
- 2026–27: $377,000
- 2027–28: $385,000
- Total = $1.133m
Co-contribution: The program does not require a co-contribution from applicants.

Native Title Anthropologist Grant Program objectives
The program aims to:
- Enhance capacity for anthropological work in the native title system
- Encourage stronger linkages between academic anthropologists and practising native title anthropologists
- Provide professional development and support for currently practising or prospective native title anthropologists
The intended outcomes of the program are to:
- increase capacity for anthropology work across the native title system
- create stronger linkages between academic and applied anthropological work, to increase the availability of highly-skilled anthropologists to support the resolution of ongoing native title claims and the effective management of determined native title rights and interests
- increase professional development and support for native title anthropologists across the sector
Activities and expenditure eligible for Native Title Anthropologist Grant Program support
To be eligible, your grant activities must directly relate to program objectives and outcomes:
1. Enhance capacity for anthropology work in the native title system
- Grant activities that help to grow and sustain the native title anthropology sector will achieve this outcome.
2. Encourage stronger linkages between academic anthropologists and practicing native title anthropologists
- Grant activities that support links between applied and academic anthropology to increase the availability of highly-skilled anthropologists to support the resolution of ongoing native title claims and the effective management of determined native title rights and interests will help achieve this outcome.
3. Professional development and support for native title anthropologists
- Grant activities which involve opportunities for native title anthropologists to develop skills that are critical for the native title sector will help achieve this outcome.
Eligible expenses may include (but are not limited to):
- venue hire for workshops, conferences and similar events
- small-scale ICT equipment hire
- stipends for interns or other work placements
- travel expenses and accommodation
- consultant fees
- wages for administration of projects funded by the grant.
You cannot use the grant for:
- ongoing operation or running costs of an organisation
- capital equipment and capital works

Organisations eligible for Native Title Anthropologist Grant Program support
To be eligible, you must be one of the following entity types:
- Company
- Cooperative
- Corporate Commonwealth Entity
- Corporate State or Territory Entity
- Incorporated Association
- Indigenous Corporation
- Local Government Entity
- Non-corporate Commonwealth Statutory Authority
- Non-corporate State or Territory Entity
- Non-corporate State or Territory Statutory Authority
- Partnership
- Person
- Sole Trader
- Statutory Entity.
You are not eligible to apply if you are a/an:
- International Entity
- Non-corporate Commonwealth Entity
- Unincorporated Association
- organisation, or your project partner is an organisation, that is included on the National Redress Scheme’s website on the list of ‘Institutions that have not joined or signified their intent to join the Scheme’
- organisation, or your project partner is an organisation, that is included on the Workplace Gender Equality Agency website on the non-compliant list.
Some organisations may want to join together as a consortium to deliver a grant activity.
In these circumstances, you must appoint a ‘lead organisation’.
- Only the lead organisation can submit the application form and enter into a grant agreement with the Commonwealth.
- The lead organisation must also be an eligible entity type.
- The application must identify all other members of the consortium.

Native Title Anthropologist Grant Program assessment criteria
Applications will be evaluated based on their ability to:
1. Addressing needs
- demonstrate how the proposal will enhance capacity for anthropology work in the native title system
- demonstrate how the proposal will address the identified needs of the native title system.
2. Achieving outcomes
- clearly explain the activities they will use to deliver their proposal (for example, training courses, professional development workshops, mentoring programs and so on)
- clearly explain how the implementation of their proposal will increase the availability of highly-skilled anthropologists to support the needs of the native title system
- outline the risks associated with the development and implementation of the proposal and how they will mitigate and manage risks.
3. Organisational capability
- provide evidence of delivery of similar activities in the past
- demonstrate cultural safety and competency
- describe the key staff that will manage and deliver the activity and outline their relevant capabilities (experience, skills and qualifications)
- outline how the activity demonstrates value for money
- demonstrate their ability to effectively develop, implement, manage and monitor activities to achieve program objectives.
How do I get the Native Title Anthropologist Grant Program?
Applicants must:
- Read and understand the guidelines.
- Ensure eligibility for the funding. Applicants that do not meet all the eligibility criteria will not be considered.
- Demonstrate a strong alignment with the fund’s objectives.
- Provide complete information requirements.
Information to prepare for the Native Title Anthropologist Grant Program application
All of the following documents must be attached to your application for it to be considered compliant and for it to proceed to assessment. Templates are provided for your use with the grant opportunity documents on GrantConnect as specified.
- Trust deed and any subsequent variations, if applying as a Trustee on behalf of a Trust
- If seeking support for individual placements, education or training opportunities, you must provide:
- Contact details for referees within the applicant’s entity
- 2 referee reports for any prospective graduate students (limited to one-page each)
