What is the Future Made in Australia Innovation Fund?

At this stage, the Future Made in Australia Innovation Fund (FMIAIF), part of the $22.7 billion package, aims to bolster Australia’s economy through clean energy and diversified industries, fostering resilience and growth [1]. Key focuses include clean energy, education, and employment security [2]. This initiative intends to allocate $16.5 billion over ten years for various projects to enhance productivity and livability [3]. The fund will also see the establishment of a Future Made in Australia Act and a National Interest Framework, which will guide the identification and support of priority industries. The FMA Innovation fund will split grant funding across three priority areas (the Priority Areas):

  • $750 million to Green Metals including iron, steel, alumina and aluminium.
  • $500 million to Clean Energy Technology Manufacturing to enable development of technologies seeking to alleviate critical supply chain challenges facing the clean energy transition.
  • $250 million to Low Carbon Liquid Fuels (LCLF) including sustainable aviation fuels and renewable diesel.

Designated as FMA Support under the Future Made in Australia Act 2024, ARENA will need to have regard for the Community Benefit Principles with the program.
