What is the ASEAN-Australia Centre Grants?
The ASEAN-Australia Centre 2024-25 Grants Program, managed by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, aims to foster collaboration and strengthen connections between Australia and Southeast Asia. The grants support initiatives in creative industries, cultural exchanges, and research to advance Australia’s engagement with ASEAN and Timor-Leste.
ASEAN-Australia Centre Grants level of support
- Minimum funding: $50,000
- Maximum funding: $200,000 per annum, with multi-year funding available up to $400,000 over two years.
Co-contribution: While not mandatory, co-contributions are encouraged. These can include financial or in-kind support such as staff hours, venue hire, or logistics management. A strong co-contribution will enhance your application.

Projects and expenditure eligible for ASEAN-Australia Centre Grants support
Eligible projects include but are not limited to:
- Creative industry exchanges in music, design, digital games, and more.
- Cultural initiatives promoting trade, tourism, and heritage connections.
- Research projects enhancing Southeast Asia literacy in Australia.
Ineligible Expenditure
- Land purchases
- Major capital expenditure
- Retrospective costs
- Ongoing salaries or administration costs unrelated to the project
- Major construction works

Organisations eligible for ASEAN-Australia Centre Grants support
Eligible applicants include:
- Australian individuals and organisations with an ABN
- Local, state, and territory government bodies
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporations
- Registered charities and not-for-profits
- Publicly funded research organisations
Ineligible organisations:
- Organisations or project partners listed on the National Redress Scheme’s website as “Institutions that have not joined or signified their intent to join the Scheme.”
- Unincorporated associations.
- Any organisations not included in the eligibility criteria.
ASEAN-Australia Centre Grants assessment criteria
Applications will be assessed against the following expanded criteria:
- Alignment with Objectives (20%): Projects should advance understanding and engagement between Australia and Southeast Asia across areas such as economic linkages, education, and cultural connections.
- Relevance to Priority Areas (20%): Demonstrate how your initiative aligns with the program’s focus on creative industries, cultural exchange, and literacy development.
- Delivery Capability (20%): Highlight your team’s skills, governance, and risk management. Include past successes and partnerships.
- Sustainability (20%): Show how the project will provide long-lasting outcomes beyond the grant period, such as institutional linkages or commercial returns.
- Impact and Reach (20%): Explain how you will amplify the grant’s benefits through partnerships, branding, and effective communication strategies.
How do I get the ASEAN-Australia Centre Grants?
Applicants must:
- Read and understand the guidelines.
- Ensure eligibility for the funding. Applicants that do not meet all the eligibility criteria will not be considered.
- Demonstrate a strong alignment with the fund’s objectives.
- Provide complete information requirements.
