What is the Traceability Grants Program (TGP)?
The Traceability Grants Program (TGP) forms part of the Australian Governmentโs Modernising Agricultural Trade โ Protecting Australiaโs Clean, Green Brand initiative.
Round 4 builds on earlier funding rounds and supports projects that:
- Improve how traceability data is captured, shared and reused
- Enable interoperable systems across supply chains
- Increase awareness and understanding of traceability through education and communication initiatives
Traceability Grants Program level of support
Grants
- The minimum grant amount is $50,000
- The maximum grant amount is $500,000
- Funding up to 100% of eligible project costs
Co-contribution
- Co-contributions are not mandatory
- Applicants must demonstrate value for money
- Financial and in-kind contributions strengthen competitiveness under assessment

Objectives
- Enhance agricultural supply chain traceability systems
- Improve exporter competitiveness in overseas markets
- Increase opportunities to export Australian commodities
Intended outcomes
- Stronger, more interoperable traceability systems with measurable results
- Improved export competitiveness for Australian producers
- Greater participation in export markets, particularly for high-risk commodities
- Cost-effective system enhancements using existing technologies where possible
Traceability Grants Program priorities
Projects must target at least one of the following priority areas:
- Align processes and technologies to capture and use data for multiple purposes, including regulatory compliance and feedback to farmers
- Support industry to implement interoperable systems across supply chains
- Implement communication and education campaigns to strengthen traceability awareness across the agricultural sector
Activities and expenditure eligible for Traceability Grants Program support
To be eligible, grant activities must:
- Address the program objectives
- Target at least one of the three priority areas for action outlined in section 2.1
- Clearly and explicitly demonstrate alignment to the objectives and priority areas within the application form and mandatory templates
Eligible expenditure includes:
- Reasonable costs directly associated with delivering the project, including salaries, wages and on-costs of staff involved in project delivery (excluding general administration costs)
- Eligible travel costs, including accommodation, flights, travel insurance and general travel expenses, where travel is directly related to the project and agreed as part of the grant agreement and/or Activity Work Plan
Grant funding cannot be used for:
- Purchase of land
- Major capital expenditure (where this forms the majority of project costs)
- Retrospective costs
- Costs incurred preparing a grant application or related documentation
- General operating and administration costs such as electricity, phone and rent
- Major construction or capital works
- Core business expenses not directly related to delivering the project
- Protecting or patenting intellectual property
- Activities that support or promote the benefit of a single commercial enterprise

Organisations eligible for Traceability Grants Program support
Eligible applicants include:
- Companies incorporated in Australia
- Incorporated associations and partnerships
- Not-for-profit organisations
- Publicly funded research organisations
- Local, state and Commonwealth government entities
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporations
- Joint (consortia) applications with an eligible lead organisation
Traceability Grants Program assessment criteria
Applications are assessed against four equally weighted criteria (25% each):
- Project alignment with program objectives and outcomes
- Suitability and effectiveness of the project approach
- Capacity, capability and resources to deliver
- Benefits, opportunities and value for money
Only applications that score well across all criteria will be competitive.
How do I get the Traceability Grants Program?
To increase chances of success, applicants must demonstrate the following:
- Clear alignment with the National Agricultural Traceability Strategy 2023โ2033, including direct alignment to at least one of the Round 4 priority areas
- Strong alignment with the program objectives and intended outcomes, explicitly stated in the application
- Genuine collaboration across industry, supply chains, government and/or research organisations, with clearly defined partner roles
- A credible and practical adoption pathway, showing how project outputs will be taken up beyond the life of the grant
- A focus on interoperable traceability systems that align with, and build on, existing technologies rather than creating new silos
- Clear benefits for industry-wide traceability outcomes, not just a single organisation or commercial entity
- Embedded education, communication or training activities to strengthen awareness and understanding of agricultural traceability
- Demonstrated value for money, including justified project costs and, where relevant, financial or in-kind co-contributions
- Proven capacity, capability and governance to deliver the project, supported by relevant experience and skilled personnel
- Identification and proactive management of project risks, including data, cyber security and intellectual property considerations

Applicants must submit:
- Completed application form
- Project plan (mandatory template)
- Budget template
- Risk management plan
- Letters of support (for consortia applications)
Incomplete applications will not proceed to assessment .
