What is the Rapid Applied Research Translation Initiative (RARTI)?
The Rapid Applied Research Translation Initiative (RARTI) is designed to support large-scale interdisciplinary research programs that significantly enhance health care and system effectiveness through innovative medical research and translation.
Two streams of funding are available:
- Stream 1 (Accelerator): the Chief Investigators are primarily resident in any area according to the Modified Monash Model (MM1-7)
- Stream 2 (Accelerator): the Chief Investigator A and 50% or more of all Chief Investigators are primarily resident in a regional, rural, or remote area according to the Modified Monash Model (MM2-7).
An application may be submitted to one of the above two Streams only. Applicants must specify the Stream they are applying for in their application.
Rapid Applied Research Translation Initiative level of support
A total of up to $40 million is available over three years, distributed across two streams:
- Stream 1 (Accelerator): Up to $15.0 million
- Stream 2 (Accelerator – regional focus): Up to $15.0 million
Additional funds of up to $10.0 million are also available for projects that demonstrate significant potential. Each project can receive a grant covering up to 100% of eligible project costs. The minimum grant amount is $250,000 and the maximum is $5 million per project.
Co-contributions are not required for this grant.

Rapid Applied Research Translation Initiative objectives and outcomes
This grant opportunity seeks to improve the health and wellbeing of Australians by supporting late-stage translational research that is directly relevant to clinical care, health services, and health practices. The research funded under this initiative will utilise existing knowledge and evidence to accelerate the translation of research findings into improved healthcare and health interventions.
Projects and activities eligible for Rapid Applied Research Translation Initiative support
Grants of financial assistance will be provided to support Australian medical research and medical innovation projects that:
- deliver late stage translational research that is directly relevant to clinical care, health services and/or health practices, which has the potential to be translated into existing policy and practice
- use existing knowledge and evidence to support and accelerate the translation of research findings into improved health care and health interventions
- address a clearly defined gap in best practice health care and health interventions to improve health outcomes, as identified by collaborating health services
- involve all stakeholders relevant to the research and its translation in its conceptualisation, design and implementation, including health care consumers and providers.
Ineligible expenditures
- Activities or equipment already funded or supported by other sources
- Costs incurred prior to the approval of the grant agreement
- Capital works or land acquisition

Organisations eligible for Rapid Applied Research Translation Initiative support
Eligible applicants include medical research institutes, universities, corporate Commonwealth entities, and other corporations incorporated in Australia.

Rapid Applied Research Translation Initiative assessment criteria
Applications will be evaluated based on their alignment with the initiative’s objectives, with emphasis on:
- Project Impact (40% weighting): Contribution to health outcomes and system improvements.
- Project Methodology (30% weighting): Feasibility and scientific quality of the project plan.
- Capacity, Capability, and Resources (30% weighting): The team’s ability to deliver the project.
How do I get the Rapid Applied Research Translation Initiative?
You should read and understand the guidelines.
You need to ensure you are eligible for the funding. Applicants that do not meet all the eligibility criteria outlined above will not be considered.
Successful applicants will demonstrate:

- an innovative project that meets the funding objectives of improving health care delivery, services and systems sustainability
- a sound project methodology with measurable benchmarks
- evidence of strategic partnerships and the involvement of consumers and other end users
- robust project governance and risk management
- an appropriate budget relative to outcomes that represents value for money
- a research team with the capacity, capability and experience to deliver the project in full within the agreed timeframe
Information to prepare for the Rapid Applied Research Translation Initiative application
The following documentation is required:
- a detailed project plan, including project methodology and a project feasibility analysis
- a list of all Chief Investigators (CIs) (template provided) who have shared authority and responsibility for leading and directing the design, conduct and reporting of the research as outlined in the EOI, including the affiliations of each person listed
- a detailed and itemised project budget (template provided)
- a statement of how your research proposal will contribute to the Measures of Success for the MRFF as described in the MRFF Evaluation, Monitoring and Learning Strategy
- a detailed risk management plan, and any supporting documentation
- details of intellectual property (IP) arrangements as an attachment if this is not included within the written content of the application
- evidence of support from your board, CEO or equivalent
- trust deed (where applicable)
- letters of support (where applicable)
