What is the Community Stewardship Program (CSP)?
The Australian Government has introduced the “Protecting the Great Barrier Reef โ Community Stewardship Program Round 1,” aimed at enhancing the resilience and health of the Great Barrier Reefโs key habitats. This initiative seeks to build stronger community involvement and stewardship to sustainably manage and protect this UNESCO World Heritage site.
CSP level of support
A total of $12.5 million has been allocated to this program over seven years, with $6.5 million available for Round 1 from 2023-24 to 2026-27. Grants ranging from $500,000 to $6.5 million will cover up to 100% of eligible expenses.

The program supports activities that:
- Improve the health and resilience of the reefโs ecosystems.
- Increase community-based protection through environmentally responsible practices.
- Enhance coordination across Great Barrier Reef Catchments.
Projects eligible for CSP support
Eligible projects will target ecological improvements in habitats such as refugial waterholes, wetlands, seagrass areas, and bird and fish nursery habitats. Projects must demonstrate a direct benefit to the reefโs health and engage local communities in their execution.

- Entities incorporated in Australia with an ABN.
- Publicly funded research organisations.
- Local government bodies and Queensland state government agencies.

Applications will be assessed based on:
- Alignment with program objectives.
- Capacity and track record of the applicant in managing similar projects.

How do I get the CSP?
Applicants must:
- Read and understand the guidelines.
- Ensure eligibility for the funding. Applicants that do not meet all the eligibility criteria will not be considered.
- Deliver the project as outlined in the application.
- Provide complete information requirements.
Projects must align with the Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan.
All activities must comply with relevant environmental laws and regulations.

- A detailed project plan and budget.
- Evidence of capability to deliver the project.
- Necessary permits and approvals.
