TLC objectives

The Liveability Challenge aims to find groundbreaking, viable solutions to critical environmental challenges that cities in the tropics face in the 21st century. With global temperatures reaching new highs, the urgency to meet climate targets is increasing. The Challenge seeks to accelerate innovative technologies and strategies that can help reduce carbon emissions and strengthen resilience against climate-induced extreme weather conditions.

Projects and expenditure eligible for TLC support

Decarbonisation Track: Seeking disruptive deep-tech solutions that reduce carbon emissions across industries. Eligible projects may focus on:

  • Waste-to-resource: Converting key waste streams into value-added products or permanent carbon removal and storage.
  • Renewable energy: Generating energy from renewable sources or developing technologies that enhance the clean energy transition.
  • Energy efficiency: Reducing energy consumption in built environments and hard-to-abate industries, such as manufacturing and logistics.

Cool Earth Track: Focusing on innovations that mitigate the challenges of extreme weather conditions and enhance resilience. Examples include:

  • Heat mitigation: Solutions that help societies withstand and adapt to the effects of rising temperatures, particularly focusing on vulnerable populations.
  • Nature-based solutions: Projects that build climate resilience for at-risk groups, such as mangrove restoration and low-methane agriculture.

Ineligible expenditure:

  • Projects involving activities that are not directly related to climate solutions, administrative overheads, or unrelated research and development are ineligible for support under The Liveability Challenge.
