What is the Avant Foundation Transformation Grant?
The Avant Foundation Transformation Grant (AFTG) is a prestigious award designed to fund projects that create transformational change in healthcare. Each year, one successful applicant is awarded $1 million over three years to support innovations that improve the quality, safety, or sustainability of medical practice. This grant is aimed at supporting ambitious projects that push the boundaries of healthcare innovation.
For 2025, the focus of the grant is on enhancing patient safety.
AFTG level of support
The Avant Foundation Transformation Grant offers funding of $1 million over three years. The funding will be allocated as follows:
- Year 1: $350,000
- Year 2: $350,000
- Year 3: $300,000 (subject to satisfactory reporting)
Up to two runners-up will receive $100,000 each in unrestricted funding to support their research.
Co-contribution:
- The Avant Foundation must be the primary funder of the project.
- Any additional co-funding must be disclosed and already secured at the time of application.

AFTG objectives
The Avant Foundation aims to create lasting impacts in healthcare by funding projects that:
- Enhance patient safety (2025 focus)
- Improve quality in medicine (2026 focus)
- Improve sustainability in healthcare (2027 focus)
Projects should demonstrate alignment with these objectives, be well-informed by existing research, and have clearly defined outcome objectives.
Projects and expenditure eligible for AFTG support
Eligible projects should:
- Aim to transform the practice of medicine.
- Use novel technology or innovative methods or propose new applications for existing methodologies.
- Have an innovative hypothesis.
The grant cannot be used for:
- Sponsorship requests or fundraising appeals.
- Projects that are not majority-funded by the Avant Foundation.

Organisations eligible for AFTG support
The following organisations are eligible to apply for the grant:
- Universities
- Charities
- Medical research institutes
- Medical and healthcare foundations
- Medical colleges and societies
- Hospitals (public or private)
- Local hospital networks
- Primary Health Networks
Each applicant must have a medical doctor as an advisor on their project team.
AFTG assessment criteria
Projects will be evaluated in three stages:
Stage One โ Expression of Interest (EOI):
- Project relevance to Avant Foundationโs objectives.
- Clarity of the project โ how well the project is defined.
- Impact โ potential benefits to healthcare.
- Experience of the project team and organisation.
- Indicative budget โ the reasonableness of the proposed funding requirements.

Stage Two โ Detailed Application:
- Project design and rationale.
- Scalability, impact, and legacy โ how the project could scale and leave a lasting legacy.
- Timeframe and budget โ the projectโs timeline and resource allocation.
Stage Three โ Final Presentation:
- Judges will evaluate the overall merit of the project during an in-person presentation.
How do I get the AFTG?
Applicants must:
- Read and understand the guidelines.
- Ensure eligibility for the funding. Applicants that do not meet all the eligibility criteria will not be considered.
- Demonstrate a strong alignment with the fund’s objectives
- Provide complete information requirements.
