What is the Research Animals Rehoming Grant Program?
The Research Animals Rehoming Grant is an initiative by the New South Wales (NSW) Government aimed at promoting the welfare of animals used in research by ensuring they can be rehomed at the conclusion of their use.
With up to $2.5 million in funding available, this program supports eligible animal rehoming organisations in NSW to enhance their capacity to successfully find lifelong homes for these animals.
RARGP level of support
The Research Animals Rehoming Grant provides funding between $20,000 and $1,000,000 per project.
While applicants are encouraged to provide co-contributions to strengthen their proposals, this is not a mandatory requirement. Projects demonstrating financial contributions may be evaluated more favourably under the value-for-money assessment criteria.

RARGP objectives
The primary objectives of the Research Animals Rehoming Grant are to:
- Promote positive animal welfare outcomes.
- Support animal rehoming organisations in NSW to build capability and capacity for rehoming animals after their research use.
- Increase awareness of animal rehoming practices and the needs of animals previously involved in research.
- Support animalsโ transition to life outside of research.
Projects and expenditure eligible for RARGP support
Eligible projects for this grant include:
- Facility and equipment upgrades: Projects aimed at upgrading or expanding animal care facilities, including repairs and the purchase of necessary rehoming equipment like bedding or crates.
- Professional services: Access to veterinary services, including desexing, vaccinations, or behavioural services for rehabilitation.
- Programs and educational materials: Projects promoting awareness of animal rehoming practices, including developing educational materials for prospective pet owners.
Ineligible expenditures include costs already covered by other government funding, ongoing operational costs like rent and utilities, and wages unrelated to project delivery.

Organisations eligible for RARGP support
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be an incorporated entity with an ABN, ACN, or NSW Fair Trading registration.
- Be a currently approved animal rehoming organisation by the Office of Local Government or have been operating in NSW for at least two years.
- Provide evidence of financial viability and insurance coverage of at least $20 million in public liability.

Applications will be assessed based on:
- Capability, experience, and capacity to deliver: Proven ability to deliver the project successfully.
- Deliverability and affordability: Feasibility of the project plan and budget, including demonstrating value for money.
- Alignment with program objectives: Clear alignment with the programโs goals to promote animal welfare and rehoming.

How do I get the RARGP?
Applicants must:
- Read and understand the guidelines.
- Ensure eligibility for the funding. Applicants that do not meet all the eligibility criteria will not be considered.
- Demonstrate a strong alignment with the fund’s objectives
