What is the Nuclear-Powered Submarines Technical Scholarships?
Announced as part of the 2024-25 Defence Budget initiatives the Nuclear-Powered Submarines Technical Scholarships grant opportunity will fund one eligible applicant to co-design and manage a national scholarship program which will provide 3,000 two-year stipend scholarships of $5,000 each to domestic students undertaking undergraduate degrees in priority science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) study areas at Australian Universities.
The scholarship program is intended to increase interest and awareness of opportunities in the Nuclear-Powered Submarine (NPS) enterprise workforce. It will ensure there is a continuous pipeline of suitable STEM graduates for the NPS enterprise, particularly in Western Australia, South Australia and other geographic locations that will play a vital role in delivering the Optimal Pathway.

- Co-Contribution: The grant covers up to 100% of eligible expenditure, implying no co-contribution is required from the recipient.

The funding will support the establishment and management of a national scholarship program to offer 3,000 two-year scholarships to domestic students. These students will undertake undergraduate studies in STEM fields crucial for the submarine program, particularly in Western Australia and South Australia.
Your project must:
- be undertaken in Australia
- include eligible activities
- be aimed at co-designing and managing a national scholarship program which will provide scholarships to domestic students undertaking undergraduate degrees in priority STEM study areas and support the Nuclear-Powered Submarine enterprise.
Ineligible Expenditure
Funds cannot be used for:
- Costs incurred prior to the grant agreement.
- Capital expenditures such as purchasing office equipment.
- Activities or supplies already funded through other sources.

Organisations eligible for Nuclear-Powered Submarines Technical Scholarships support
Eligible entities must be incorporated in Australia and include:
- Incorporated trustees on behalf of a trust.
- Not-for-profit organisations.
Entities not eligible include publicly funded research organisations, government bodies, and organisations non-compliant with the Workplace Gender Equality Act.

- Alignment with Policy Intent: Projects must align with the strategic objectives of the AUKUS submarine pathway.
- Organisational Capability: Applicants must demonstrate capacity and experience in managing large, complex STEM education initiatives.
- Financial Management: Ability to manage and account for large funding amounts responsibly.
