What is the Mount Isa Transition Fund (MITF)?
The Queensland Government has committed up to $20 million to the Mount Isa Transition Fund to support the local workforce and economy following the closure of key mining operations by Glencore. This fund is part of a broader $50 million package aimed at economic and community development in the region.
MITF level of support
The MITF will provide financial grants ranging from a minimum of $100,000 to a maximum of $2 million per project, covering up to 100% of total eligible project costs.

The main objectives of the MITF are:
- To support job creation in Mount Isa.
- To strengthen the economic foundation of Mount Isa.
- To enhance community resilience and liveability in the region.

Eligible projects include, but are not limited to:
- Education and training initiatives.
- Infrastructure projects that support local businesses.
- Community and social infrastructure improvements.
- Projects that enhance Mount Isaโs economic diversification.

Organisations eligible for MITF support
Eligible applicants must have:
- An active Australian Business Number (ABN) or Australian Registered Body Number (ARBN).
- Registration for Goods and Services Tax (GST).
- A bank account in the legal entityโs name.
Local government bodies, other than the Mount Isa City Council, and individuals or sole traders are not eligible.
MITF assessment criteria
Projects will be evaluated based on:
- Their alignment with the MITFโs objectives.
- The potential economic and social benefits to the Mount Isa region.
- The applicantโs capacity to deliver the project.

How do I get the MITF?
Applicants must:
- Read and understand the guidelines.
- Ensure eligibility for the funding. Applicants that do not meet all the eligibility criteria will not be considered.
- Deliver the project as outlined in the application.
