What is the Mount Isa Transition Fund (MITF)?

The Queensland Government has committed up to $20 million to the Mount Isa Transition Fund to support the local workforce and economy following the closure of key mining operations by Glencore. This fund is part of a broader $50 million package aimed at economic and community development in the region.

MITF level of support

The MITF will provide financial grants ranging from a minimum of $100,000 to a maximum of $2 million per project, covering up to 100% of total eligible project costs.

MITF objectives

The main objectives of the MITF are:

  • To support job creation in Mount Isa.
  • To strengthen the economic foundation of Mount Isa.
  • To enhance community resilience and liveability in the region.

Projects eligible for MITF support

Eligible projects include, but are not limited to:

  • Education and training initiatives.
  • Infrastructure projects that support local businesses.
  • Community and social infrastructure improvements.
  • Projects that enhance Mount Isaโ€™s economic diversification.

Other MITF important details that you will need to know

Eligible applicants must have:

  • An active Australian Business Number (ABN) or Australian Registered Body Number (ARBN).
  • Registration for Goods and Services Tax (GST).
  • A bank account in the legal entityโ€™s name.

 

Local government bodies, other than the Mount Isa City Council, and individuals or sole traders are not eligible.

Projects will be evaluated based on:

  • Their alignment with the MITFโ€™s objectives.
  • The potential economic and social benefits to the Mount Isa region.
  • The applicantโ€™s capacity to deliver the project.

  • Read and understand the guidelines.
  • Ensure eligibility for the funding. Applicants that do not meet all the eligibility criteria will not be considered.
  • Deliver the project as outlined in the application.
  • Provide complete information requirements.

 

Applicants need to prepare detailed project proposals including budgets, timelines, expected outcomes, and evidence of project viability.
