What is the Men’s Shed Funding Program?

The Men’s Shed Funding Program is an initiative by the Victorian Government aimed at supporting the construction, refurbishment, and equipping of men’s sheds across Victoria.

These sheds play a crucial role in fostering social connections and improving the well-being of men within the community.

MSFP level of support

  • Minimum grant amount – not indicated
  • Maximum grant amount – $100,000
  • Co-contribution: Applicants must provide a 20% co-contribution to the project cost, which can include in-kind contributions.

The program is designed with several key objectives in mind:

  • Strengthen social connections: Reduce social isolation among men by providing a communal space for interaction.
  • Support community involvement: Encourage men to participate actively in local community activities.
  • Enhance shed capabilities: Increase the range of activities offered by sheds to better meet community needs.
  • Build local partnerships: Foster stronger connections between shed groups and the wider community.
  • Promote diversity: Increase the number and diversity of men participating in shed activities.

Projects and expenditure eligible for MSFP support

The funding can be utilised for the following purposes:

  • Constructing new men’s sheds: This includes converting existing buildings into men’s sheds.
  • Refurbishing, extending, or upgrading existing sheds: Enhancing the current facilities to better serve the community.
  • Purchasing major equipment: For the first time, the program covers the purchase of major machinery or equipment necessary for the operation of the sheds.

Other MSFP important details that you will need to know

Eligible organisations must:

  • Have a valid ABN and be incorporated.
  • Be based in Victoria.
  • If unincorporated, they must arrange an auspice with an incorporated organisation.

Applications will be assessed based on:

  • Alignment with program objectives.
  • Demonstrated community need.
  • The strength of partnerships with local organisations.
  • The inclusivity and diversity of the project.
  • Organisational capacity and readiness to deliver the project.

Applicants must:

  • Read and understand the guidelines.
  • Ensure eligibility for the funding. Applicants that do not meet all the eligibility criteria will not be considered.
  • Deliver the project as outlined in the application.
  • Provide complete information requirements.

 

The department supports applications for projects that:

  • specifically target a reduction in social isolation in men by providing a workshop-based male only environment on some days
  • support the inclusion of women and gender-diverse people on some days or for specific activities
  • create a culturally inclusive atmosphere and encourage multicultural participation
  • demonstrate significant value to the social framework of the local community in proportion to the amount of invested funds.

 

Ensure that you:

  • Respond to the program’s objectives in your application.
  • Provide evidence of your organisation’s eligibility.
  • Detail the proposed use of funds and demonstrate your ability to contribute 20% of the project cost.
