What is the Kindness in Community Fund?

The Kindness in Community Fund, established by the Born This Way Foundation in 2022 and expanded globally in 2024, aims to address the emerging and evolving mental health needs of young people. The fund supports community-led organisations that provide free and accessible youth mental health resources and are rooted in inclusion, equity, and community care.

This funding round seeks to highlight and amplify the work of organisations led by or informed by youth, and encourages nominations from young people themselves. Nominated organisations will be vetted by the Foundation, and shortlisted candidates will be invited to submit a simple proposal to access up to $150,000 USD in funding.

  • Minimum amount: Not specified
  • Maximum amount: $150,000 USD per organisation or approximately between 232,350 and 233,892 AUD
  • Co-contribution required: No

Kindness in Community Fund important dates

  • Round 2 Deadline: 30 June 2025 (12 PM PST) or  1 July 2025 at 6:00 AM in Sydney, Melbourne Time.
  • Successful Recipients Announced: By December 2025

Kindness in Community Fund objectives

This funding opportunity is designed to:

  • Support the emerging and evolving mental health needs of young people aged 15–24.
  • Fund youth-led or youth-informed organisations addressing youth mental health.
  • Promote access to free, inclusive, and community-informed mental health resources.
  • Prioritise organisations rooted in equity, inclusion, kindness, and community engagement.
  • Provide a simple and accessible funding process with minimal administrative burden.
  • Strengthen global youth mental health outcomes by supporting local, culturally responsive efforts.

Kindness in Community Fund eligible locations

International, including Australia, and specifically open to organisations based in:

  • Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States

Other countries may be nominated, though funding is not currently available outside the listed regions. Nominations from other locations will be held on file for future consideration.

Projects and expenditure eligible for Kindness in Community Fund support

Organisations should provide free and accessible mental health resources and be rooted in inclusive, community-driven practice.

Examples of eligible services include:

  • Direct mental health services
  • Youth-led peer support
  • LGBTQIA+ advocacy
  • General health and wellness programs
  • Youth mentoring and leadership development
  • Educational resources on mental wellbeing
  • Gender-specific or marginalised group-specific programming
  • Career and professional development

Ineligible expenditure:

  • Services not focused on mental health
  • Activities that charge fees for access to mental health support
  • Organisations without youth leadership or input

Other Kindness in Community Fund important details that you will need to know

Eligible organisations:

  • Non-profits, NGOs, tax-exempt, or similar
  • Focused on youth mental health
  • Led by or informed by young people
  • Based in one of the eligible countries

All nominations will be reviewed by the Foundation and shortlisted with the help of the Youth Advisory Board (ages 15–24). Nominations submitted by young people aged 15–24 will be given greater weight.

Shortlisted organisations will then submit a streamlined proposal for consideration. The assessment will be based on:

  • Alignment with youth needs and leadership
  • Provision of free and accessible mental health services
  • Commitment to inclusion, equity, and community practice
  • Impact potential within local communities

 

Applicants must:

  • Read and understand the guidelines.
  • Ensure eligibility for the funding. Applicants that do not meet all the eligibility criteria will not be considered.
  • Deliver the project/s as outlined in the application.
  • Provide complete information requirements.

 

Shortlisted organisations will need to prepare:

  • A short proposal explaining how funds will be used
  • Description of the organisation and its youth leadership model
  • Details of services provided and target audience
  • Demonstrated commitment to accessible and equitable service delivery
