What is the Built Heritage Grants Scheme (BHGS)?

The scheme aims to ensure that Tasmaniaโ€™s built heritage places are valued, protected, maintained, and leveraged for the benefit of Tasmania and Tasmanians.

Conservation Program (Small Grants)

  • Supporting state-registered property owners to undertake small but significant, heritage conservation and restoration activities.

Activation Program (Large Grants) [Closed]

  • Supporting heritage property owners, skills development organisations and the community to activate heritage places.

BHGS level of support

Grants

A total of $1 million is available under Round 1 (2023-24) of the Grants Scheme through two Programs:

  1. Conservation Program: Small grants of $5,000 to $20,000
  2. Activation Program: Large grants of $20,000 to $200,000

Co-contribution

  • Co-investment refers to contributions to the total project by the applicant โ€“ such as cash, labour, equipment, or materials. Proposed co-investment will need to be appropriately detailed in the application and a declaration provided on completion of the project.
  • Co-investments can include: cash or in-kind contributions including, equipment or materials and volunteering time such as labour and expert advice.
  • Calculate labour and goods at the market price you would expect to pay for them.

Conservation Program

  • While co-investment is not mandatory, it will be considered favourably in the assessment process.

Activation Program:

  • As a guide, a co-investment to grant ratio of 3:1 (i.e. 75%) is expected under this Program. A broader public good would need to be demonstrated if a lower co-investment ratio is proposed.

Ensure your project complies with applicable legislation and regulations

    1. Historic Cultural Heritage Act 1995
    2. Land Use Planning Approval Act 1993

Consider if your project requires works approval

  • Where the project includes works to a state heritage-registered place, works approval in the form of a Certificate of Exemption or Discretionary Permit may be required.
  • Ideally, these approvals should be obtained through Heritage Tasmania prior to submitting your application.
  • If works approval has not been obtained, or still in progress, at the time of application, the applicant will be required to provide evidence of how their project will meet the relevant criteria stated in the Tasmanian Heritage Councilโ€™s Works Guidelines, as part of their application. The eligibility of those applications may involve consideration of the information provided.
  • For all cases, where an offer of funding is made, evidence of a Certificate of Exemption or Discretionary Permit must have been received within 30 days of the offer date, or the offer will be automatically withdrawn.
  • Heritage works advice is available for potential applicants via Heritage Tasmaniaโ€™s Works Advisory Team (contact details provided on page 2 of the guidelines).
