What is the 2024 Improving Health Outcomes of People with Intellectual Disability Grant Opportunity?

The 2024 Improving Health Outcomes of People with Intellectual Disability Grant Opportunity, offered by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) in partnership with the Department of Health and Aged Care, aims to support innovative medical research addressing critical health challenges for individuals with intellectual disabilities. This initiative falls under the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) and seeks to fund impactful, collaborative research that addresses key health challenges.

Through its three targeted research streams, this grant opportunity seeks to improve preventive healthcare, support seamless healthcare transitions, and develop or optimise diagnostic tools for this population:

  • Stream 1 (Targeted Call for Research): Develop and evaluate person-centred preventive healthcare approaches for people with intellectual disabilities, partnering with health sectors and individuals with lived experience.
  • Stream 2 (Targeted Call for Research): Co-design and assess healthcare transition strategies across life stages for individuals with intellectual disabilities, involving health sectors and lived experience input.
  • Stream 3 (Targeted Call for Research): Optimise and implement screening or diagnostic tools for mental and physical health challenges in people with intellectual disabilities.

2024 Improving Health Outcomes of People with Intellectual Disability level of support

  • Total Funding Pool: $20 million
  • Grant Value: Up to $2.5 million per project for Stream 1; up to $2 million per project for Streams 2 and 3.
  • Co-Contribution: Not required.

2024 Improving Health Outcomes of People with Intellectual Disability outcomes

The anticipated outcome/s of the research is to improve the health and wellbeing of Australians by:

  • Stream 1 (Targeted Call for Research): improving understanding and uptake of preventive health care for people with intellectual disability.
  • Stream 2 (Targeted Call for Research): improving understanding of, and access to, appropriate health care across the lifespan for people with intellectual disability.
  • Stream 3 (Targeted Call for Research): supporting the improved identification of health issues in people with intellectual disability.

Projects and expenditure eligible for 2024 Improving Health Outcomes of People with Intellectual Disability support

Eligible Projects

Projects must align with one of the three streams:

Stream 1 (Targeted Call for Research): conduct large-scale, multidisciplinary projects, in partnership with the health and disability sector and people with lived experience, to develop, optimise and/or evaluate person-centred approaches for preventive health care for people with intellectual disability.

Funding in Stream 1 is available as follows:

  • Topic A: projects that focus on oral health  
  • Topic B: projects that focus on other types of preventive health.

Stream 2 (Targeted Call for Research): develop and/or evaluate approaches to support health care transitions across life stages for people with intellectual disability, through co-design with the health and disability sector and people with lived experience.

Funding in Stream 2 is available as follows:

  • Topic A: projects that focus on the health care transition from paediatric to adult care
  • Topic B: projects that focus on the health care transition from adult to aged care.  
  • Topic C: projects where the organisation undertaking the majority of the research is located, and the Chief Investigator A, 50% or more of all Chief Investigators, and all research participants are primarily resident, in a regional, rural, remote or very remote area according to the Modified Monash Model (MM2-7).

Stream 3 (Targeted Call for Research): develop, optimise and/or implement screening or diagnostic tools for mental health and/or physical health issues in people with intellectual disability.

Ineligible Expenditures

  • Organisational overheads and administrative costs.
  • Computers or general-purpose office equipment.
  • Travel insurance and personal memberships.
  • Costs associated with conference attendance unless pre-approved.
  • Overseas research activities beyond approved limits (maximum 10% of total funding).

Other 2024 Improving Health Outcomes of People with Intellectual Disability important details that you will need to know

Only MRFF Eligible Organisations may apply. For Stream 2, Topic C, the majority of research must be conducted in MM2-7 areas (regional, rural, remote, or very remote).

Criterion 1: Project Impact (40%)

  • Contribution to advancing health outcomes, policy, or practice.
  • Demonstrated collaboration with consumers and stakeholders.
  • Focus on priority populations, including culturally diverse and marginalised groups.

 

Criterion 2: Project Methodology (30%)

  • Scientific and practical feasibility of the project plan.
  • Clear milestones and performance indicators.
  • Governance structures supporting project delivery.

 

Criterion 3: Capacity, Capability, and Resources (30%)

  • Research team expertise and experience.
  • Access to necessary facilities and infrastructure.
  • Strong partnerships and co-investment contributions.

 

Criterion 4: Overall Value and Risk (non-weighted)

  • Alignment with MRFF objectives and value for money.
  • Robust risk management strategies.

 

Applicants must:

  • Read and understand the guidelines.
  • Ensure eligibility for the funding. Applicants that do not meet all the eligibility criteria will not be considered.
  • Demonstrate a strong alignment with the fund’s objectives.
  • Provide complete information requirements.

 

Applicants must also:

  • Address a specific research stream and clearly define their project scope.
  • Include consumer involvement at all stages, ensuring meaningful contributions from individuals with lived experience.
  • Submit a de-identified Easy Read version of their proposal.
  • Demonstrate the potential for significant advancements in healthcare for individuals with intellectual disabilities, backed by strong partnerships and robust methodologies.

 

Applicants should prepare:

  • A clear project proposal addressing the grant’s objectives and criteria.
  • A detailed risk management plan.
  • Consumer Involvement Statement.
  • Letters of support for any cash or in-kind contributions.

 

All required documents, including the Easy Read Grant Proposal, must adhere to the formatting guidelines outlined in the grant application instructions.
