What is the AgTech Grants Program?

The LaunchVic AgTech Grants Program (ATGP) is a strategic initiative to support early-stage AgTech startups in Victoria. In partnership with Agriculture Victoria, this program aims to enhance the capabilities of AgTech entrepreneurs, helping them develop their businesses and move to the next stage of growth.

ATGP level of support

  • The program offers a grant of $50,000 per startup.
  • This amount includes $48,500 as a cash grant and $1,500 to cover the cost of a professional startup mentor.
  • The grants are equity-free and non-dilutive, allowing startups to retain full ownership and control of their businesses.

The primary objective of the LaunchVic AgTech Grants Program is to support early-stage AgTech startups in Victoria by providing them with the necessary funding and resources to build capability, grow their businesses, and contribute to Victoria’s economic growth.

Projects eligible for ATGP support

Eligible projects include those that focus on:

  • Plant or animal science
  • Crop protection and input management
  • Precision agriculture
  • Indoor agriculture
  • Sensors and smart farm equipment
  • Imagery
  • Animal technologies
  • Processing and packaging
  • Supply chain and hardware technologies

Expenditure eligible for ATGP support

Funding is provided to cover business capability and growth costs, excluding routine operational expenses, retrospective activities, or land acquisition costs.

Other ATGP important details that you will need to know

Eligible applicants must:

  • Meet LaunchVic’s definition of an AgTech startup.
  • Be a registered business with an ABN and, if required, registered for GST.
  • Be based in Victoria, with at least 50% of assets and employees located in the state.
  • Be an early-stage startup, as defined by LaunchVic.
  • Not have raised more than $500,000 (excluding GST) in funding to date.
  • Adhere to Victorian Government policy on ESG prohibited activities.

 

The key assessment criteria include:

  1. Business Overview: Description of the startup, the agricultural problem being solved, the development stage, and any funding received.
  2. Capability of Execution: Information about key personnel, founders’ experience, and participation in educational and professional development activities.
  3. Ongoing Commitment: Contributions by founders, time commitment, and resource allocation during the grant period.
  4. Early Traction: Details on business traction, revenue generated, customer base, and product trials.
  5. Financials: Usage of grant funding, expected outcomes, and budget for the project.

 

Applicants should read and understand the guidelines.

Applicants will be required to address Eligibility Criteria and Applicant Information. You need to ensure you are eligible for the funding. Applicants that do not meet all the eligibility criteria outlined above will not be considered.

Applicants will also need to address Key Assessment Criteria and complete the Declaration before submission.

Successful applicants will demonstrate:

  • capability to engage with the agriculture sector, including in regional locations.
  • a viable project plan with detailed activities and milestones that identifies and manages risk and the necessary resources/approvals to succeed
  • a sound project budget that justifies funding and demonstrates the commitment of all partners
  • the necessary capacity, capability and experience to deliver the project in full within the agreed timeframe

 

Provide the following information with your application to support your responses to the assessment criteria:

  • Business overview and description
  • Details of key personnel and founders
  • Evidence of traction and potential for business success
  • Financial details and budget plan
  • Standard investor pitch deck with goals and potential barriers
