What is the Horticulture Netting Infrastructure Grants (HNIG)?

The Horticultural Netting Infrastructure Grants (HNIG) is an initiative by the Government of South Australia aimed at supporting primary producers of horticultural crops. This program provides grants for the purchase and installation of new netting or the replacement of damaged netting to protect crops from extreme weather and predators, enhance productivity, and improve water use efficiency.

HNIG level of support

The program offers grant funding for up to 50% of the total project costs, with a maximum grant of $300,000 (excluding GST). This funding is intended to assist with the costs of purchasing and installing protective netting and associated support structures.

HNIG objectives

The primary objectives of the HNIG are to:

  • Protect horticultural crops from adverse weather conditions and predators.
  • Increase water use efficiency.
  • Ensure continuity of supply.
  • Improve the quality and marketability of harvested crops.

Projects eligible for HNIG support

Funding under the HNIG is available for:

  • The supply and installation of new and replacement permanent and throw-over protective netting.
  • Associated support structures required for the installation of the netting.

Projects must demonstrate compliance with relevant planning and building regulations and ensure that netting meets specifications for adverse weather protection (mesh sizes no larger than 30mm).

The following projects and activities are not eligible for HNIG funding:

  • Projects that have already received assistance from other relevant State or Federal Government grant funds to achieve the same project outcomes.
  • Projects where netting and/or associated support structures have been damaged by the bushfires of 2019-20.
  • Projects where insurance has been claimed for damaged netting and/or associated support structures.
  • Retrospective funding for purchases or works undertaken prior to 16 December 2019.
  • Feasibility studies, business cases, reports, and development plans.
  • Costs associated with the preparation of the application.
  • Operational expenditure, including wages, utilities, self-installation, repairs, and maintenance.
