What is the Tasmanian Food Relief Capital Investment Grants?

The Tasmanian Food Relief Capital Investment Grants Program 2025 provides funding to strengthen food relief infrastructure across the state. This includes upgrades and expansion of cold storage, logistics, and commercial kitchen facilities for community food relief organisations.

This funding is intended to transition Tasmania’s support model from emergency food relief to a more sustainable and resilient food support network.

Grants are available into two categories:

  • Small Grants for community organisations that currently or intend to provide food relief.
  • Large Grants for community organisations that have been operating as a food relief organisation in Australia for at least five years.

Tasmanian Food Relief Capital Investment Grants level of support

The program has a total pool of $2.5 million, available through two funding tiers:

  • Small Grants – up to $25,000
  • Large Grants – up to $250,000

Organisations may be awarded partial funding based on merit and budget justification.

Co-contribution: A co-contribution is not explicitly required, but applicants are encouraged to outline other confirmed or potential sources of funding in their application. Demonstrating financial contribution may strengthen your case under the “Value for Money” criterion.

The program aims to:

  • Enhance the capacity of Tasmania’s food relief sector through infrastructure improvements.
  • Promote long-term food security and resilience.
  • Encourage collaboration among food relief organisations and other community partners.
  • Ensure investment directly benefits Tasmanians in need.

Projects and expenditure eligible for Tasmanian Food Relief Capital Investment Grants support

Eligible Expenditure:

  • Capital works including renovations, upgrades, or building improvements to food relief premises
  • Construction of new food relief facilities
  • Purchase of food relief premises (freehold)
  • Purchase and installation of inbuilt commercial cooking and storage equipment

Ineligible Expenditure:

  • Fees associated with design, engineering, drafting, and legal consultations

Other Tasmanian Food Relief Capital Investment Grants important details that you will need to know

Small Grants:

  • Community organisations currently delivering or intending to deliver food relief in Tasmania

 

Large Grants:

  • Established food relief organisations operating in Australia for at least five years

 

All applicants must:

  • Be a not-for-profit organisation
  • Hold a valid Australian Business Number (ABN)
  • Be an incorporated organisation, a parents and friends association, or an auspiced not-for-profit entity

 

Ineligible Applicants:

  • Local councils, state or federal government agencies
  • For-profit organisations, individuals, sole traders
  • Political parties or tertiary institutions

 

All applications will be assessed against the following five criteria, each weighted equally at 20%:

1. Demonstrated Need (20%)

  • Identify who will benefit from your project
  • Explain why your community needs the project
  • Highlight existing service gaps

 

2. Planning and Delivery (20%)

  • Provide a clear project plan, timeline, and risk management strategy
  • Demonstrate organisational capability to deliver the project

 

3. Benefit to the Community (20%)

  • Detail how the project will deliver long-term, measurable benefits
  • Show how impact will continue after the project is complete

 

4. Value for Money (20%)

  • Include a detailed budget and two formal quotations
  • Identify all sources of confirmed and potential co-funding

 

5. Community and Sector Collaboration (20%)

  • Explain how you will collaborate with community groups, councils, and local organisations

 

Applicants must:

  • Read and understand the guidelines.
  • Ensure eligibility for the funding. Applicants that do not meet all the eligibility criteria will not be considered.
  • Deliver the project/s as outlined in the application.
  • Provide complete information requirements.

 

To apply, you must submit:

  • A project plan (including tasks, timeline, resources, and responsible persons)
  • A project budget detailing costs
  • Two current, formal quotations for all externally funded items
  • A risk management plan
  • Public liability insurance certificate
  • Photographs and professional plans (if applicable)
  • Written permission from the property owner (if you don’t own the premises)
