Grants up to $500,000 to support the sport and active recreation sector to build new, and upgrade existing, sport and active recreation infrastructure in Tasmania.

What is the Tasmanian Active Infrastructure Grants Program?

The Tasmanian Active Infrastructure Grants Program (TAIGP) is an initiative by the Tasmanian Government to improve local sport and active recreation facilities. Through TAIGP, organisations can access funding to build new, or upgrade existing, sport and active recreation infrastructure. The overall aim is to ensure that more Tasmanians, regardless of age or background, have a safe, accessible, and inclusive place to get active.

Tasmanian Active Infrastructure Grants Program level of support

Grants:

  • Minimum grant amount: $25,000
  • Maximum grant amount: $500,000

  • Encourage physical activity for Tasmanians of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Upgrade facilities to comply with current standards, improve accessibility, and cater to a wide range of community activities.
  • Boost overall community well-being by making sport and active recreation more widely available in local areas.

Projects and expenditure eligible for Tasmanian Active Infrastructure Grants Program support

The focus is on projects that build or improve functional and inclusive sport and active recreation infrastructure. Examples include:

  • Construction and upgrade of inclusive changerooms, toilets, and shower facilities
  • Development of new playing fields or multi-use courts
  • Field lighting to extend usage times and enhance safety
  • Accessible paths and ramps

Ineligible expenditure (cannot be funded by TAIGP) includes (but is not limited to):

  • Routine or cyclical maintenance
  • Perimeter fencing that is purely external to the activity space
  • Equipment purchases (e.g. scoreboards, portable items)
  • Spaces used primarily for commercial operations, bar or gaming areas
  • Car parks, social spaces, or other areas not directly related to the sporting or active recreation activity itself
  • Projects without written landowner approval

See the guidelines for full details of projects and expenditure eligible for funding.

Other Tasmanian Active Infrastructure Grants Program important details that you will need to know

To meet the eligibility criteria, you must:

  • have an Australian Business Number (ABN) to apply.
  • be compliant with the Child and Youth Safe Organisations Framework.
  • Incorporated, not-for-profit sport and active recreation organisations (under the Tasmanian Associations Incorporation Act 1964)
  • Local government authorities (councils)
  • Not-for-profit organisations registered under the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth)

Note: Each local government authority can submit multiple applications but must rank them in order of priority. Other organisation types may submit only one application.

See the guidelines for full details of organisational requirements.

TAIGP applications are competitively assessed based on the following three main criteria. While no specific percentage weightings have been disclosed, it’s essential to demonstrate strength in each area:

1. Demonstrated Need

  • Existing usage and facility condition: Outline current activities, frequency of use, and any safety or compliance issues.
  • Inclusivity and accessibility: Highlight how your project will improve participation among under-represented or disadvantaged groups.
  • Community benefit: Explain the broader social or economic benefits (e.g. for regional or low socio-economic communities).

2. Value for Money

  • Increased participation: Illustrate how the project could grow memberships, attract new participants, or support multiple sports/activities.
  • Multi-use potential: Show that the facility can serve more than one club, sport, or community group.
  • Financial contribution: Indicate your level of co-funding (20 per cent minimum, 10 per cent in cash). Projects with higher contributions may receive priority.
  • Universal design: Demonstrate how the project incorporates features to accommodate people of all abilities and backgrounds.

3. Capacity to Plan and Deliver

  • Project plan: Provide a clear scope of works, budget, quotes, site plans, and timelines.
  • Risk management: Address potential challenges (e.g. permits, contractor availability) and how you’ll mitigate them.
  • Land ownership or occupancy: Include a letter of support if you are not the facility or landowner.
  • Funding and experience: Outline your organisation’s capacity, financial stability, and relevant track record to successfully manage the project.

  • Check your eligibility: Ensure you’re an eligible organisation and that your project fits the program objectives and requirements.
  • Develop your project scope: Confirm costs, gather quotes, and identify any required approvals.
  • Prepare your co-contribution: Ensure you can provide the minimum 20 per cent (with at least 10 per cent cash).
  • Compile your documentation: Examples include landowner approvals, architectural or engineering plans, and letters of support from stakeholders.

Applicants should gather and develop:

  • Budget and Quotes: A detailed budget with confirmed quotes for major cost items.
  • Evidence of approvals/permits: Written confirmation or a statement from local council or planning authority.
  • Design drawings and specifications: Especially if you’re constructing or making significant changes to facilities.
  • Risk Assessment: Identification of major risks and mitigation strategies.

Being well-prepared in these areas will help demonstrate your project’s viability and community value.

See the guidelines for full details of information requirements.
