What is the Synergy Grants?
The NHMRC Synergy Grants program is designed to support outstanding multidisciplinary teams of investigators to collaboratively tackle major questions that cannot be answered by a single investigator. This initiative fosters innovation through collaboration, bringing together researchers from diverse fields to address critical challenges in all areas of human health and medical research, from basic discovery to translational outcomes.
Synergy Grants level of support
The total funding allocation for the Synergy Grants 2024 round is $50 million, supporting 10 grants at $5 million each. Applicants must be from NHMRC approved Administering Institutions.
Co-contribution: This grant does not require a co-contribution from participating institutions.

Synergy Grants objectives and outcomes
The objective of NHMRC’s Synergy Grant scheme is to support outstanding multidisciplinary teams of investigators to work together to answer major questions that cannot be answered by a single investigator.
The intended outcomes of the Synergy Grant scheme are to support:
- multidisciplinary research that addresses major problems in all areas of human health and medical research, from discovery to translation
- highly collaborative teams of diverse researchers including by gender, career stage and cultural background, working together to address major problems in human health.
Projects and expenditure eligible for Synergy Grants support
Eligible projects must involve significant multidisciplinary research that proposes innovative approaches to important health questions. Projects should demonstrate potential for high impact outcomes and translation into health policy or practice.
Ineligible Expenditures: The grant funds cannot be used for capital works or the purchase of major assets.

Applications will only be accepted from NHMRC approved Administering Institutions.

Synergy Grants assessment criteria
Applications are assessed based on:
- Knowledge Gain (30%): Quality of the research and significance of the knowledge gained.
- Synergy (30%): Effectiveness of the team’s multidisciplinary approach.
- Track Record (40%): Past achievements of the team members relative to opportunity.

How do I get the Synergy Grants?
Applicants must:
- Read and understand the guidelines.
- Ensure eligibility for the funding. Applicants that do not meet all the eligibility criteria will not be considered.
- Demonstrate a strong alignment with the fund’s objectives.
- Provide complete information requirements.
