What is the Supporting People with Cancer?

Cancer Australia has announced the 16th round of the Supporting People with Cancer (SPWC) grant opportunity, which aims to fund projects that reduce the impact of cancer and improve support for individuals affected by the disease across Australia. This initiative is closely aligned with the strategic objectives of the Australian Cancer Plan, with a significant focus on enhancing equity in cancer outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

This grant opportunity requires co-contributions from recipients:

  • Minimum Grant Amount: $40,000
  • Maximum Grant Amount: $120,000
  • Co-contribution requirements are not explicitly specified in the guidelines but typically depend on the project’s scope and expected outcomes.

The SPWC grant aims to:

  • Fund community-led, evidence-based projects that address the strategic objectives of the Australian Cancer Plan.
  • Improve outcomes and experiences for all Australians affected by cancer, particularly those groups whose health outcomes are poorest.

Activities and expenditure eligible for Supporting People with Cancer support

To be eligible your project must be a new project with activities aimed at supporting people with cancer consistent with the purpose of SPWC Round 16. Projects that are a continuation of an existing project will not be eligible for funding.

Eligible activities must directly relate to the project and may include:

  • involving consumers in the development of evidence-based, accessible, culturally safe and relevant information about cancer
  • involving consumers in the development of decision-making tools and resources that help consumers to better navigate the cancer patient journey
  • involving consumers in the development of consumer information kits for cancers, in mediums tailored to the audience (such as print, online, or multi-media)
  • involving consumers in the design and delivery of support services for people affected by cancer
  • adapting or translating information and resources in a way that recognises the cultural, linguistic and socioeconomic circumstances of the intended audience
  • disseminating information and resources in a way that recognises the cultural, linguistic and socioeconomic circumstances of the intended audience
  • providing quality, innovative, and sustainable approaches to supporting people affected by cancer, which may include face-to-face or virtual cancer support networks or workshops
  • supportive care activities focused on family and carers of people with cancer
  • increasing access to and participation in cancer screening and immunisation for the prevention and early detection of cancers
  • improving capacity of service providers to work with people affected by cancer, particularly those with poorer outcomes, including through the development and delivery of educational resources or programs
  • supporting better access to optimal and culturally appropriate cancer treatment, services, and supportive and palliative care

Eligible expenditure items are

  • personnel, including salaries for project staff and on-costs
  • project activities, including training, workshops, resource development and distribution, consumer engagement, promotional activities etc.
  • remuneration for consumers involved in project activities
  • assets that are specific to the project activities
  • other direct costs.

Ineligible Expenditures

You cannot use the grant for the following:

  • costs of activities that are a continuation of an existing project
  • personnel not directly involved in the project or the portion of a person’s time when they are not directly involved in the project
  • scholarships, research, PhD funding, cash support
  • activities that are not outlined in the grant agreement
  • the covering of retrospective costs
  • costs incurred in the preparation of a grant application or related documentation
  • subsidy of general ongoing administration of an organisation such as electricity, phone, and rent
  • assets exceeding 10% of the total funding awarded
  • assets of any value that are not specific to the project activities
  • major construction/capital works
  • overseas travel
  • health-related service delivery already covered by the Medicare Benefits Schedule or the National Health Reform Agreement
  • activities for which other Commonwealth, state, territory or local government bodies have primary responsibility.

Other Supporting People with Cancer important details that you will need to know

The following are eligible applicants:

  • Category 1: Community organisations that are registered charities or not-for-profits.
  • Category 2: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations that are registered under the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006.

 

You are not eligible to apply if you are:

  • an individual
  • a university or research institute, or their associated charity
  • a mainstream health service or its associated charity
  • a for-profit organisation
  • an overseas organisation
  • a Commonwealth, state, territory or local government agency or body (including government business enterprises)
  • an organisation associated with the tobacco industry
  • an organisation, or your project partner is an organisation, included on the National Redress Scheme’s website on the list of ‘Institutions that have not joined or signified their intent to join the Scheme’ (www.nationalredress.gov.au)

Applications will be assessed based on:

  • Project Design and Budget (30%) – Projects should demonstrate strong evidence of need, an appropriate scope of work, and a robust budget.
  • Organisational Capacity (20%) – Ability to deliver similar projects successfully.
  • Consumer Engagement (20%) – Involvement of consumers in the project’s design and delivery.
  • Equity of Cancer Experiences and Outcomes (30%) – Projects should increase equity of cancer outcomes and experiences, aligning with the Australian Cancer Plan.

 

Applicants must:

  • Read and understand the guidelines.
  • Ensure eligibility for the funding. Applicants that do not meet all the eligibility criteria will not be considered.
  • Demonstrate a strong alignment with the fund’s objectives.
  • Provide complete information requirements.

 

Applicants must prepare the following:

  • Project Proposal
  • Budget Justification
  • Organisational Information
  • Evidence of Community Engagement
  • Capability Statement
  • Consumer Involvement Plan
  • Governance and Accountability
  • Letters of support from partner organisations, if a joint application.
  • Documentation verifying the organisation’s legal status and charitable registration.
  • Any required certifications such as Working with Children and Vulnerable People registrations.
