Up to $50,000 for building, buying, or renovating Sheds, helping communities particularly men, gain enhanced social connections, better mental health, and a safe, inclusive environment.

What is the Men’s Sheds Capital Investment Grants?

The Tasmanian Men’s Sheds Capital Investment Grants Program 2025 (TMSCIG) is a Tasmanian Government initiative designed to help Men’s Sheds across Tasmania improve their physical facilities. Through a total pool of $1 million, this program funds the construction, purchase, or renovation of Sheds so that local communities—particularly men—benefit from enhanced social connections, improved mental health, and a safe, inclusive environment for hands-on activities.

Men’s Sheds Capital Investment Grants level of support

Grants:

  • Minimum Funding: No formal minimum has been specified.
  • Maximum Funding: $50,000 per approved project.

Co-contribution:

  • There is no mandatory co-contribution requirement, but the application form allows you to indicate any additional financial or in-kind contributions. If the project exceeds $50,000, you must have the remaining funds secured to ensure project completion.

Projects that need more than $50,000 may be considered for “additional funding” but only if the $1 million total pool is not fully allocated in this initial round.

Men’s Sheds Capital Investment Grants objectives

The primary objectives of the grant are to:

  • Increase capacity and sustainability of Men’s Sheds: Strengthen the physical and operational foundations of Sheds so they can better serve members.
  • Promote men’s health and wellbeing: Encourage safe, friendly, and supportive environments that foster social connections and reduce isolation.
  • Enhance community benefit: Ensure each Shed’s improvements flow on to the broader community, facilitating stronger local engagement and volunteer opportunities.
  • Deliver permanent or fixed infrastructure upgrades: Focus on capital works—rather than equipment or short-term initiatives—so Men’s Sheds have long-term viability.

Projects and expenditure eligible for Men’s Sheds Capital Investment Grants support

Eligible projects must involve permanent or fixed capital works, such as:

  • Constructing new Men’s Sheds (with secured supplementary funding, if required).
  • Renovating or upgrading existing Shed premises (e.g., building improvements, infrastructure upgrades).
  • Purchasing a Men’s Shed outright (freehold), as long as any remaining required funds are already secured.

Ineligible expenditure under TMSCIG includes:

  • Tools, equipment, or machinery that are not considered permanent or fixed (funded separately under the Tasmanian Men’s Shed Association (TMSA) Grants Program).
  • Men’s health training or initiatives (also covered by TMSA Grants).
  • Design, drafting, engineering, or legal costs, unless specifically allowed by the Assessment Panel.

Other Men’s Sheds Capital Investment Grants important details that you will need to know

To apply, your organisation must:

  • Have current public liability insurance.
  • Either be a current member of the Tasmanian Men’s Shed Association (TMSA), or be a Men’s Shed in Tasmania that:
    1. Primarily provides hands-on workshop activities for men (though women are not strictly excluded).
    2. Is an Incorporated Association, or is auspiced by one.
    3. Aligns with TMSA’s core values: providing a safe, friendly environment, encouraging inclusion and wellbeing, and having minimal joining fees.

See the guidelines for full details of organisational requirements.

Applications are reviewed for eligibility and then assessed according to the following criteria:

1. Benefit to the Men’s Shed and members

  • How significantly the project is likely to improve health, wellbeing, and social connectedness for men in the local area.
  • The Shed’s current capacity to fund or manage such improvements without government support.

2. Demonstrated need

  • How the project will help ensure the long-term sustainability of the Men’s Shed (e.g., attracting new members, offering more activities).
  • Evidence that members and/or the community support the project.

3. Benefit to the broader community

  • Potential for community-based activities, outreach, and partnerships that reinforce the Shed’s role in the local area.

4. Project management and feasibility

  • Clear timeline, budget, and risk management plan.
  • Evidence of licensed, qualified individuals or companies to carry out the capital works.
  • Feasibility of completing the project within required timeframes.

5. Value for money

  • Transparent, detailed budget with two current, formal quotes for each major expense.
  • Inclusion of any additional funding (government, philanthropic, or in-kind contributions).
  • Preference for using Tasmanian suppliers where possible.

No formal percentage weightings are stated for these criteria; however, all five are closely considered during the assessment process.

  • Check your eligibility: Ensure you’re an eligible organisation and that your project fits the program objectives and requirements.
  • Develop your project scope: Confirm costs, gather quotes, and identify any required approvals.
  • Compile your supporting documentation: Examples include a work plan and a detailed project budget.

Before applying, gather the following information:

  • Proof of Incorporation or auspicing arrangements.
  • Public Liability Insurance Certificate (copy attached to the application).
  • Project Plan, including scope of works, timeline, and any relevant design or engineering details.
  • Detailed Budget:
    1. Two quotes for each major cost item.
    2. Any co-contributions or alternate funding.
  • Evidence of community and member support (e.g., letters of support, meeting minutes).
